Reining Our Resilience - May Tip No 2

“Helping others strengthens your self-compassion and resilience”

When we show compassion towards ourselves, we are more likely to embrace challenges that enable us to learn and grow.

And yet, self-compassion is a practice that is very difficult for many of us to master.

One generous way to begin a practice of self-compassion is to help others. Every week identify one opportunity to offer assistance to someone in need, like a stressed friend or a lonely neighbour.
Research shows that when people help others, the compassion they demonstrate to someone else shapes their perception of who they are. This helps them recognise that everyone makes mistakes, has shortcomings and experiences problems.

What will you do this week to help someone else?

Tips derived from Christopher Shen’s book Wrestling with Resilience: A Handbook for Developing Resilience and Toughness. To learn more about Christopher Shen
