Jan Smith - Julius L Patching Sports Official of the Year

Equestrian Victoria is excited to announce that equestrian stalwart Jan Smith has been awarded the prestigious title of Julius L Patching Sports Official of the Year in the 2019 Victorian Olympic Awards announced by the Victorian Olympic Council via live stream on the evening of Thursday 30 April.

This award is in recognition of the unprecedented and tireless contribution of Julius L Patching to the Victorian Olympic Council (VOC) and Olympic community. “Judy” as he was known was a voluntary Official from 1947 until his death in 2009.  This award recognises the outstanding contribution that officials make to the fabric of the Olympic sporting community in Victoria.

Jan has selflessly contributed to the equestrian discipline of dressage across all levels from grassroots to Olympic. The longevity, impact and diversity of roles Jan fulfills is evidence of her extraordinary dedication, excellence and commitment.  

Her roles as judge, steward, event organiser, selector, committee representative, and mentor, along with her passion for developing the next generation of riders is to be highly commended.

Jan has been a National Selector for the elite Australian dressage teams for many years and her extensive, up to date and reliable knowledge of rules, along with her highly regarded integrity, makes her the ‘go to’ official for dressage at a state and national level.

Jan’s attitude is one that is frequently described as ‘more than 100% committed’ and ‘tenacious’, and she is held in the highest esteem by her peers.

“I was delighted to hear the announcement of Jan’s win”, said Matthew Brown, Equestrian Victoria CEO. “We are grateful and very fortunate to have someone of her calibre and dedication involved in our sport.  The win is thoroughly deserved”.

This title adds to Jan’s long list of accolades including 2018 Equestrian Victoria Official of the Year, and more recently the Women in Sport Outstanding Contribution Award in 2019. 

Equestrian Victoria has a history of success in the Julius Patching Award since its inception in 2007, including Chris Wallis (Finalist 2018), Lindy Young (Finalist 2017) and Barry Roycroft (Winner 2010).

“I’m so excited and thrilled to win the Award and to be recognised amongst such highly respected colleagues”, said Jan when informed of the announcement.  “I admire Chris, Lindy and Barry so much for their professionalism, knowledge and generosity”.

Equestrian Victoria congratulates Jan on this extremely well-deserved win and extends thanks for her tireless ongoing contribution and dedication to the sport.
