LIFETIME SERVICE TO SPORT – JANET HOUGHTON

Few people in Victorian eventing have given more, for longer, than Janet Houghton, who was honoured with the Lifetime Service to Sport Award at the 2026 Equestrian Victoria Annual Awards.

Janet’s journey began in 1971 as President of the Junior Committee at Ringwood Pony Club, and over the decades she has shaped our sport at every level, from grassroots to the international stage.

She served as Chair of Eventing Victoria and as an Equestrian Victoria Board member from 2014 to 2023, before taking on the role of Chair of the Equestrian Australia National Eventing Committee, a position she continues to hold today. For 14 years she has also led the Victorian State Eventing Squads, and since 2016 has been a Director of both the Melbourne International Three-Day Event and the Spring International Horse Trials.

The Lifetime Service to Sport Award recognises those whose exceptional contribution is driven by a genuine love for the sport and its community. Service often happens quietly — organising competitions, mentoring riders, supporting events and clubs, and working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure our sport continues to grow.

Janet is the very definition of a go-to person: trusted, tireless and deeply committed to the long-term success of eventing. Her contribution may not always make headlines, but it has helped shape the sport we enjoy today.
